Buccal Mucosa Graft

Buccal Mucosa Graft (BMG)

Buccal Mucosa Graft (BMG) is a surgical technique used primarily for urethral reconstruction, often to treat complex or recurrent urethral strictures. This procedure involves harvesting a graft from the inside of the cheek (buccal mucosa) and using it to repair or replace the damaged section of the urethra.

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. First, a small section of the buccal mucosa is carefully removed. This graft is then shaped and sutured into the affected area of the urethra, creating a wider and more functional passage for urine flow. The mouth heals quickly after the graft is taken, and the buccal mucosa typically regenerates without significant issues.

BMG is highly effective for treating long or complex strictures that are not suitable for other procedures like dilation or internal urethrotomy. It offers a durable solution with a high success rate and low recurrence of strictures. Recovery from the surgery involves a short hospital stay and a few weeks of restricted activities to ensure proper healing.

Potential complications include graft site infection, oral discomfort, and urethral issues such as leakage or fistula formation. However, these are relatively rare, and most patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life. Consulting with a healthcare provider can provide more detailed information and help determine if BMG is the right option.
