Procedures

Cystoscopy

A cystoscopy is a test to check the health of your urethra and bladder. You might also hear it called a cystourethroscopy or, more simply, a bladder scope. A cystoscopy can be used to look for and treat problems in the bladder or urethra. For a flexible cystoscopy, local anaesthetic gel is used to numb the urethra. This will reduce any discomfort when the cystoscope is inserted. A rigid cystoscopy is carried out under general anaesthetic (where you’re asleep) or a spinal anaesthetic (which numbs the lower half of your body), so you will not have any pain while it’s carried out.

DJ Stenting

Double J (DJ) stenting is a common procedure in urology. There are certain prophylactic and therapeutic indications for bilateral DJ stenting like bilateral calculus obstruction, following bilateral lower ureteric reimplants, in cases of malignant ureteral obstruction and after bilateral uretero-renoscopy (URS).The stent is often used when there is a blockage in the ureter (for example, from a kidney stone) and allows urine to drain around the blockage. This helps decrease the pain associated with the blockage (i.e. kidney stone) and allows your kidney to function as normal as possible.

DJ Stent Removal

The DJ stent generally needs to be replaced or removed within 6 weeks to 6 months to avoid complications like encrustations, stone formation, fractures and blockades of stents. The DJ stent is removed with the process called cystoscopy and DJ stent removal. In this procedure the patient is made to lie down on a table and a local anesthetic Jelly is placed in the urinary passage after which a scope is inserted and the DJ stent is visualized and extracted using an endoscopic forceps. However, in many cases the stent is forgotten.
