Optical Internal Urethrotomy

Optical Internal Urethrotomy (OIU)

Optical Internal Urethrotomy (OIU) is a surgical procedure used to treat urethral strictures, which are narrowings of the urethra that can cause difficulty urinating, painful urination, and urinary tract infections. OIU offers a minimally invasive solution to this problem, providing relief and improving urinary flow.

During OIU, a cystoscope with a specialized cutting tool is inserted through the urethra. The surgeon then makes precise incisions in the stricture to widen the narrowed area. This procedure is typically performed under local or general anesthesia and takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

After the procedure, a temporary urinary catheter may be placed to ensure proper healing and urine flow. Most patients can go home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days, although strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks.

OIU is effective in providing immediate relief from urethral stricture symptoms. However, there is a risk of recurrence, which might require repeat procedures. Other potential complications include bleeding, infection, and injury to the urethra. Discussing these risks and the expected outcomes with a healthcare provider can help patients make an informed decision about their treatment options.
